lost

I know you wanted a dream about triumph
you didn’t want it to end badly
you wanted a hero to save the girl
you didn’t want her to get lost
you didn’t expect her to drift
so surely out of his reach
but this nightmare had a compulsive will of its own
an assertion that was just too obscure
for mortal beings like me to grasp and control
so it forced its way onto this page
a heartless dream with a monster lurking inside
all wicked looks and sneers
I invited the frantic hero
to use my own vicious monster
its sharp claws could pierce skin
and grip sore flesh tight
making beautiful thick crimson blood
that turns black as ink at night
but let me tell you the worst
that your hero was not so gallant
unable to stand firm or impress or intimidate
and your girl was ethereal
like vapor frosts in the chill air, then dissipates.
I’ll let you surmise the rest
assure yourself that it was all a dream
and you have wakened safe
in your bed
beside me
as I lay
so silent
so still
so…

This is about as Halloweenish as I get. I don’t celebrate Halloween and I don’t believe in ghosts but I do understand that there are monsters lurking in our dreams mine is kind of vicious when I need it to be.
