The Look

The look, wow the look on his face
surely this was not how he wanted to look
all wide open, vulnerable, all susceptible
a pushover, definitely not his usual look
not the seven thousand dollar suit look
where are those red-soled shoes,
wait, he had red-soled shoes, right?
all his stuff in a leather rucksack
pretending to be Gucci
but it’s better, it’s old and it’s worn
with a lived in look, well loved
he carried his arrogance on his shoulder
that’s what’s missing, that arrogance
revealing eyes, a sense of power
power that seems like it might wane
oh it’d smell like nonsense, if nonsense had a smell
I wonder if his hands are clean
not saying he looks suspicious
he looks like an ordinary man
attempting to be strong, not failing
but why did he get in the way of that camera?
an unforgiving day is the wrong day
to forget to wear his impervious smile.
and be wearing Chucks instead.

This is not about my son Nick. Although, I think he could pull off a seven thousand dollar suit and he likes good shoes, but Nick’s shameless, he ain’t gonna give up his Converse Chucks any time soon. He’s always going to be a little arrogant and love old, worn-in things. He’s cheeky like that.
